Dr. Gian Singh Ghuman

Gian Singh Ghuman July 7, 1929 – November 3, 2023

Dr. Gian Singh Ghuman peacefully passed away November 3, 2023, after a long and blessed life. He is preceded in death by his wife Sital and his son Jaspaul. He is survived by his sons; Tarlochan (Teach) and Mintoo, his daughter-in-heart, Connie; his grandchildren, Alyssa and Everett; his brother, Mohinder, his sister, Nasib, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 nieces and nephews.

He was born in the Barchuhi village in the Punjab state of India and grew up in the style of farm life. He excelled in academic endeavors which became the focus of his life’s work. He was educated in Punjab and took a teaching position in Jobner in the state of Rajasthan. By the time he and Sital had barely started raising their three young sons, he took advantage of an opportunity to study in the United States at the University of California-Davis. After receiving his PhD at UCD, moved his family to Georgia to take a position on the faculty at Savannah State College. He remained on the faculty at SSC (and later SSU) for 38 years, and even teaching there part-time up to the age of 82.

Coming to Savannah, GA when there were very few Indian families, Gian was very active in cultural gatherings to provide encouragement, support and socializing for his friends who had experienced similar journeys.

Gian and Sital were in the founding group of the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara in Augusta, Georgia, and Gian served as its treasurer for many years, until he was no longer physically able to attend.

Gian always enjoyed harvesting the peppers, squash, okra, eggplant and other vegetables he devotedly tended up to the age of 91.

Advancing age eventually prevented him from engaging in his life pursuits to the fullest, but he courageously fought to get the most he could out of his time on earth.

Head coverings will be worn during the ceremony of Paath Sukhmani Sahib for family and the Sikh community - 10AM, November 11, 2023, followed by a celebration and tribute to Gian’s life at 11:15AM, Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel. All are welcome.
